The difference between efficiency consulting and structure consulting is that efficiency is about problems on a small scale, while structure is more about process across the organization chart. So, for Structure Consulting, we are not focused on an assembly line and trying to find out how many widgets can be made per hour. We are more focused on finding unneeded redundancy, conflicts, bottlenecks, islands and cloaking.

Redundancy can be very important. It makes certain that you do not have disruptions and it helps with quality control. Sometimes, though, there is unneeded redundancy. This is where there are few or no benefits. We help identify such situations and come up with appropriate recommendations. The possibility exists that could even recommend additional redundancy if we see it lacking.

Sometimes different work groups can operate at cross-purposes. This makes both groups have to work harder simply to counteract the operations of the other. Uncovering the conflicts in an organization, as opposed to personal conflicts, is the key to enhancing the efficiency of overall operations. The concept of a bottleneck is often misunderstood. More specifically that the assumption, it is really about any part of a business that results in other parts of the company waiting. Idle time spent waiting for supplies, approval, or review, is time that could be used productively. We can help identify the bottlenecks in your organization and either come up with ways to overcome them or suggest changes to have that downtime to be productive.

Islands are where groups or individuals are separated from the rest of an organization. The people on that island operate without interacting with the main company and inefficiencies due to poor communication exist. In the worst cases, islands can operate without outside supervision or accountability. We can look at your islands and determine if the situation is causing problems and reducing efficiency and recommend changes.

CLOAKING

Cloaking is a little-used term for a common problem. Cloaking is where individual workers, or even whole departments, simply disappear off of the radar from management. Sometimes such groups simply provide no productivity whatsoever and are just happy to be flying below the radar. In other cases, cloaking simply results in mistakes becoming institutionalized.

We work with groups that are small, medium and large. We also work with people that are in the city, the suburbs, and that are in more rural areas. It never made sense to get our own facilities. We come to a venue of your choosing and this allows you to make your own food and beverage options. In general, you want enough light to see, enough space to move around comfortably, and it should be quiet enough to hear. Everything else can be adjusted to.

WHAT IS THE REASON?

The first step is to determine your needs. This includes potential goals, desires and concerns. The more we know about what has already been decided can allow us to narrow the conversation to approaches that interest you.

WHAT ARE THE DETAILS? WHERE? WHEN? HOW MANY?

We need to know the city where the event will be as well as what kind of venue might be used. A date, or date range, for when you would like to have this and what time frame you are looking for will help to determine our commitment and availability. Knowing the size of your group, though that will likely just be an estimate, will allow us to choose appropriate options and have a better feel for the resources required.

DO YOU HAVE A BUDGET?

If you know budget limitations, that can allow us to restrict the conversations to those options that will be within your financial constraints. This works in both directions. We don't want to overbuild and propose options that can't be done. Also, we don't want to provide less than we could realizing the resources that could be made available to better achieve your goals.
